Tanzanite is a fairly soft gemstone with a hardness of 6 1/2 to 7. Be very careful if you have a Tanzanite ring. Take care to avoid exposing it to temperature extremes.
Tanzanite is only found in Tanzania which is where it's name comes from. It is a relatively new gemstone, first being found in 1967.
The most sought after and expensive tones are the deep violet blue colours. I love the paler violet periwinkle colour - a perfect match to Pantones colour of 2022!
It can appear different colours of blue and purple depending on the angle of the light entering through the crystal. This is called Pleochroism.
Most Tanzanite is heat treated to remove the brown / yellow tones.
